Slimona has been studied by sanofi-aventis as an aid to smoking cessation based on studies for up to one year in over 6,500 smokers motivated to quit smoking.
Sanofi-aventis submitted a New Drug Application to the FDA, which in turn issued a non approvable letter for Slimona for use in smoking cessation. An approvable letter was however issued for Slimona for use in weight management.
How Taken:
The usual dose is one 20 mg tablet to be taken once daily in the morning before breakfast. Swallow the tablet whole.
Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Precaution:
Slimona should only be used with patients who have a BMI over 30 or a BMI over 27 with associated risk factors. Do not take while on anti-depressant medication. Slimona should be cautiously in patients with moderate renal impairment, epilepsy, patients using potent inhibitors and rare hereditary disorders and galactose intolerance. In addition, those over 75 should take care when using the Slimona. Those who should not take Slimona include those with severe renal impairment, uncontrolled psychological disorders, a cardiovascular event in the last six months and patients who are breastfeeding or pregnant.
Side-Effects:
Side effects in the trial on Slimona in obesity were vomiting and nausea, forcing about 19 percent of patients to leave the trial versus 13 percent of those who took placebo.
