Situated in the upper range of Himalayas, world famous Jammu and Kashmir is well connected with rest of the world by roadways, railways (till Udhampur and then from Qazigund to Baramulla districts) and airways.

Travellers can reach Kashmir by road or by flight. At Srinagar city, there is one airport with international and domestic terminals. However, international air services are available from few countries only. Domestic flights from popular cities of India can be boarded to reach Kashmir.

By road, Kashmir is connected with other north Indian states by national highway, NH1A. The road distance from Delhi (the national capital) to Srinagar is about 900 kms.  The distance from Jammu to Srinagar is around 300 kms. The means of transportation to reach Srinagar from Delhi include deluxe inter-state bus services, air-conditioned private coaches also famous as Volvos and sleeper coaches. Smaller tempo travellers, sumo cars and Qualis can also be availed from Delhi. The buses can be boarded near Red Fort.

The railway service for Kashmir is still not completely operational. Travellers sometimes reach Jammu or Udhampur by train and from there board taxi or bus. We would suggest taking the road from Jammu for the beautiful scenery, the roads along the mountains and deep gorges, but the road trip is taxing.

Once you reach Jammu / Kashmir /Leh, you can avail local bus services, auto rickshaws for commuting or taxi. You will find taxi stands all over the place. The most popular ones are located in main commercial centers. You can easily find them.

The Valley of Kashmir is well connected with rest of the state. There is regular taxi and bus services to Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Kargil, Ladakh, Gilgit, Katra, Kargil, Leh and other tourist places of the State.

Yet, there is one ride you must never miss in Srinagar – the boat ride. It is more exciting to explore the interiors of the Dal and Nigin Lake. However, for safety we advise you to hire a local guide.
